Recycling program for university waste
Our university has zero waste target in accordance with our government’s policy. The start of the campaign is shown in Picture.
“Waste Management Commission” was established in order to develop an environmentally friendly system and to decompose chemical wastes coming out of laboratories and recycling which are important and necessity today. In addition, the Occupational Health and Safety Training Center is actively involved in waste disposal.
Çukurova University makes yearly contracts with a local recycling company İpek Recycling Company, representing municipality of Sarıçam. Paper, plastic, glass and metallic wastes of students and faculties are collected by the company for recycling. Special containers shown in the picture are provided by this company and located around the campus.
Electronic Wastes are collected according to the Electronic Waste Control Regulation of the Ministry of Environment and Urbanization and sent to Organization of Mechanical and Chemical Industries (MKE-https://www.mkek.gov.tr/tr/)
Program to reduce the use of paper and plastic on campus
1. Çukurova University uses the IT supported CUBIS (Education Information System) with following different uses for reducing paper use on the campus:
• Academic Information System (ABS) – Academic announcements, course enrollments, notes and grades are given on this system which can be accessed by all students.
• Education Information System (EBS) – Course catalogue for under graduate and graduate programs
• E-library – Use of data base enables to reach and download nearly 100000 scientific
• Scientific Research Fund – All submissions of project proposals, reports, budget use can be done online. (https://library.cu.edu.tr/cu/e-kaynaklar)
Electronic Document Uploading System (EBYS) – All official documents are communicated through various departments of the university. University uses this system since 2014, which allowed saving of 2.738 trees, 13 million liters of water and avoided 773 tonnes of CO2 and 55 tonnes of solid waste. As a result, 22 milyon A4 papers were saved. 2. Using 2 - side of paper is encouraged in all photocopying and printing.
3. Would you be my feet?
Çukurova University Turkish Language and Literature Department students started a Social Responsibility project titled “Would You Be My Feet?" on October 23, 2019. They are collecting plastic bottle caps and sending them to the Spinal Cord Paralysis Association for buying wheel chairs. The first 50 kilos support was delivered on March 13, 2020. The project continues to reach out to supporters through live broadcasts on instagram under the name of @ayaklarimolurmusun. Number of collected caps is increasing and reached to more than 100. The cargo companies are also supporting the campaign by providing free delivery. This environmental friendly project attracts supporters not only from university students but also from society through campaigning activities. It increases public awareness and responsibility on waste reduction.
